New Multi-Core iPhone with Firmware 3.0?

ZDNet reports that the iPhone 3.0 firmware will support quad-core processors in an upcoming iPhone hardware revision. While Apple has not yet detailed iPhone 3.0 firmware, MacRumors has independently heard from a reliable source of this same multi-core support in the 3.0 firmware which should accompany the next iPhone.

Meanwhile, Imagination Technologies is announcing a multi-core GPU that could be suitable for iPhone use. Apple, an investor in Imagination Technologies, presently uses a less powerful version of their PowerVR GPU in the iPhone and iPod touch.

The likely candidate for the new iPhone’s CPU, however, is a derivative of the ARM Cortex A9 multi-core processor. The ARM Cortex has excellent power efficiency, well ahead of Intel’s Atom offerings. Apple appears to be an ARM architectural licensee and their acquisition of P.A. Semi has brought low-power chip design expertise into the company.

I tend to believe that Apple will do a real announcement with something to bite into before spring.  They have a lot of juicy stuff on the burner, both Mac Mini and iPhone based, no doubt.  So…will you wait?

    We have no choice.

We’re on the fourth year of a two-year Verizon contract. Our phones are literally falling apart, so we’ll be moving over to ATT asap.

  2. chuck h Says:

If you buy a new iphone between now and this spring, you are not very smart.

  3. chuck h Says:

I didnt mean that for you lew, sorry I didnt see your comment. I have been off sprint contract for a year now and my phone just died. I bought a new sprint one on ebay for 40.00 brand new for now until the new iphones come out and incase att vt iphone transitions and such dont roll over that smoothly.

  4. slider Says:

I saw that article on Macrumors yesterday. I’ll definitely be waiting.

  5. Torvald Says:

I want to start enjoying the Iphone now and will be buying it as soon as I can transfer my 802 number from Verizon…

  6. Bill Says:

I have a hard time believing this. I mean, they don’t even have Quad-core in the laptops, and the iPhone will get them first? I know it will be a completely different chip type, but still. I think the iPhone has plenty of power now and developers are only going to get more familiar with the platform as time goes on. I know I’m still planning to get an iPhone as soon as it is available here.

  7. slider Says:

Apple has been investing in the iPhone’s architecture for awhile now. While I echo your skepticism regarding quad core, I’m holding out for the possibility of a dual-core chip (hmm, actually, what’s in the iPhone now). This couple with the change in wireless chips, increased capacity leads me to believe there might be some other surprising features built into the next iPhone. The market has become flooded with iPhone wannabes since the introduction of the first iPhone, some of which are pretty good, so it makes sense that Apple might try and leap even further ahead. And lets not forget the open source Android phones, a sleeping giant to be sure – this is Apples real competition and where Apple’s hardware will be just as important as it’s OS.

    Multi-core iPhones in 2009? No

and leading up to this article, look at

From the article “Will there be a Quad-core phone in 2010? Probably YES. ”

And while we are talking chips, take a look at speculation on ARM

You’ll always be playing the waiting game if you try to follow the rumor sites. Most were definitely sure there was going to be a Mac Mini and iMac update this week, but nothing happened. There is no doubt there will be a new iPhone, but no one knows when that will be. For my needs, the iPhone now meets them all.

    Official date is the 15th!

  11. slider Says:

Absolutely, if you’re good with the iPhone right now, get it. Anyone who gets the iPhone on the 12th can be fairly confident Apple won’t update the iPhone next week or even next month (probably the earliest would be March).

I know all about the waiting game, as I’ve indicated in another thread, but the thing is, I can wait, I don’t really “need” the iPhone, it’s something I want and there are some productivity apps that I’ve already decided to get (OmniFocus for one), which would definitely be very beneficial for me at work and home.

I had more or less already decided to wait for a 32GB iPhone, but the temptation to just get it now was strong, these recent “rumors” and lets be clear here, that is what these are, just solidified my decision to wait for the 32GB.

  12. Lew Says:

FYI, I was told by personnel at the Dorset Street store this afternoons that they would be selling everything except the iPhone on Monday, January 12th. Phone numbers will be able to be ported over from other carriers on Monday.

As reported above by Jar, they told me the iPhone will be available for sale on Thursday, January 15th.

  14. neil Says:

does anyone have a complete list of the stores in VT that will be carrying the iPhone on the 15th?

  15. Lew Says:

    neil…

As of Saturday morning, January 10th, you can still go to the Unicel site to locate their corporate stores. Click on “Stores near me” at the top of the page, enter your zip code, the stores listed as Unicel corporate stores have become AT&T corporate stores. Those stores will have the iPhone on January 15th.

For those that are thinking on waiting until the next iPhone revision is release, be aware that wait may be 6 to 7 months off:

“He noted that Apple marches to certain annual product cycles: the holiday season (Novemberish), the educational buying season (late summer), the iPod product cycle (October), the iLife development cycle (usually March), the iPhone cycle (June).”

  17. Luigi193 Says:

I juts got off the phone with AT&T yesterday, and they confirmed the 12th…

  18. jar Says:

12th is the store opening sans iphones. First day for iphones is the 15th.

  19. Tom Says:

I’m syncing up my new 802-numbered iPhone as I type this. Picked it up at an AT&T store in Northampton Mass., and they were able to transfer my Verizon account and number no problem.

    Cheers,
    Tom

  20. slider Says:

Hey, you might be the first one. Congrats :)

  21. Jon Says:

Tom – what zipcode did you give AT&T for your service address? I’m still not able to confirm eligibility on AT&T’s website.

  22. Tom Says:

I used my regular Burlington adress and it worked fine.

  23. Tom Says:

That is, 05401. Must be that the AT&T stores got onto the system before the website is updated.

  24. John Says:

This webpage now appears when you visit Unicel and type in a VT zip code
    http://www.wireless.att.com/mergers/unicel/

  25. Michael Says:

Tom wins the race! What stores will be ready to go on the 15th? Can anyone google map that for us?

  26. Bill Says:

What are people thinking the demand will be here? I work Thursday, so I would prefer to wait until after work, but I don’t want the stores to run out of the black 16gig iPhone. I know we’re not a large population here, but we have been waiting a while.

  27. saho Says:

I am going to go stand in line for when the store opens.

  28. Jenn Says:

spoke with a woman at the Dorset St store on Saturday, she indicated there was nothing I could do ahead of time to make the process faster, she expected a line at 9am on Thursday, but didn’t feel like they would run out of stock, but I didn’t get specific numbers from her.

  29. Mike Says:

I just ported my 802 number from Verizon over to my iPhone 3G. AT&T said I now have the first 802 iPhone in existence! :)

  30. neil Says:

i signed up for a new Unicel plan back in Sept/Oct. Any thoughts on whether I’ll be able to upgrade to an iPhone at the lower $199/$299 prices or will I likely be required to ‘break’ the contract in order to get an iPhone?

  31. Tom Says:

I just ported my 802 number from Verizon over to my iPhone 3G. AT&T said I now have the first 802 iPhone in existence!”

Congrats. Except I got mine yesterday at noon, picked it up in Northampton Mass. Did anyone else get one yesterday?

Anyway, i love mine, and hope you’re grooving on yours, too!

  32. John Says:

I’d be interested to see how the Unicel to ATT customer switch process goes down. I stopped by the Essex store last night. It was jammed. I picked up some pricing plans and noticed that the Family Talk 550 plan was missing from the pamphlet. It is available on line – at a non-VT zipcode. I wonder if they are tailoring the pricing to the area. Also, I saw no free phone offers at the store – plenty on line. I plan to get an iphone and a phone for my wife.

  33. Lew Says:

    John…

You’re right about no free phones in the stores. Also, the online selection of phones is much better. FYI, web site access for Vermont zip codes is supposed to be turned on Thursday morning…same day iPhones become available.

We’re headed south next week for two months, so I’m going to try to pick up my iPhone Thursday at one of the local stores. I was originally planing to order online, but I don’t want to cut it too close just in case there is a problem.

Good luck to everyone planning to brave the crowds on Thursday!

  34. John Says:

I was thinking of heading to Plattsburg. The ATT store over there has been open for a while and they should have iphones… no crowds, longer drive.

  35. Mr Kahuna Says:

I’d call before driving to Plattsburgh. According to this article they’re not getting the iPhone until Jan 15 too. http://www.earthtimes.org/articles/show/att-mobility-arrives-in-plattsburgh-on-january-15th,678492.shtml

  36. dani Says:

i was on the att website and saw that they have two new stores up there. one for the burlington mall and one for st.albans but you still cant order online.. so thats strange…

  37. Lew Says:

I spoke with an ATT salesman at the Dorset Street store on Monday who told me the web site would not be open to Vermont zip codes until Thursday. He said they didn’t open it up earlier because they didn’t want people jumping the gun and ordering iPhones early.

He seemed pretty knowledgeable. We’ll see tomorrow morning.

  38. Wes Says:

    i hope tomorrow isn’t a madhouse.

  39. saho Says:

Where are most people going? Dorset?

  40. John Says:

Dorset will be a crazy. The ATT rep said there would be media, lines, etc. Essex Junction might be the place to go. I’m going to keep refreshing my zipcode on the att website.

  41. car jacks Says:

I have to say, that I could not agree with you in 100%, but that’s just my IMHO, which indeed could be wrong.
