I honestly do not believe that those posted plans are correct for iPhones… we got a two line 700 minute shared FamilyTalk plan on the iPhone for $129.99/month. There is a separate rate sheet for iPhones.

The graphics shown are for “ordinary” phones. iPhone is more because (a) they subsidized the price down to $199 (for an 8GB unit) and (b) because iPhone users are expected to use much more data bandwidth.

  2. William Says:

Vermont Hobbit is correct. My brother and I got our iphones a few hours ago, the 700 minute $129.99 plan is the cheapest family plan.

  3. Luigi193 Says:

Its much cheeper online, you can get iPhone family for the price listed above…

  4. Luigi193 Says:

OOO I get it. Its 130 because it includes the 30 dollar data plan! Those above prices are correct, they just don’t include the 30 REQUIRED bucks.

  5. Don Says:

Finally!! Just went to the ATT website and punched in my Vermont area code and lo and behold I did not get the pop up saying ATT is not in the area!!!! The coverage map still shows affiliate though.

Last night I picked up two iPhone 3G 16gb. The lowest plan offered was the AT&T Family Talk 700 for $129.99 ($69.99 for the two phones + required $30 data plan for each). No sign of the 550 minute plan which I asked about several times. Then there’s the taxes. My costs broke down like this (they give you a cost sheet) including the $5/phone 200 text message plan I added instead of opting for the $0.20 each message option.

  7. Torvald Says:

Chris, I belive you can call ATT customer service and switch to the 550 minutes plan.

iPhone Insurance. I did not know this but AT&T does not offer any replacement insurance and Apple only offers a one year plan (automatic) with an option to buy one more year. This plan does not cover damage due to dropping the phone only software or hardware malfunction.

I discovered Square Trade (www.squaretrade.com) which has a special policy for the iPhone that covers breakage / dropping issues. I thought this would be of benefit to those who just invested their hard earned money to buy an iPhone. The insurance can only be purchased within 30 days of buying the iPhone…, think about it and check out the website.

I thought I read in the paper there was going to be some marketing targeting existing Unicel customers to get them to sign a contact with ATT.

    Has anyone received any offers?

  10. Chris Says:

I was able to change to easily switch to the 550 family plan on under my plan options on my AT&T profile. Funny the store insisted 700 was the lowest minute family option. Anyway, looks like the author is correct about the 550 minute option. Mine is effective first of next month.

  11. Chris Says:

So… I just got back from ATT ….The salesperson said there will be promotional plans starting 2/09 for Unicel customers switching over to a new plan with ATT. That was enough to make me wait on an iPhone purchase. Might not be for some :)

  12. Patrick Says:

I live in Hartland, VT and just got an iphone and lg shine yesterday.

i’m noticing that i get only 1-2 bars of coverage on my iphone and 0-1 bars on the lg shine.

my work phone is unicel, and i’m getting 3-4 bars in the exact same spot.

does anybody know if they are still in process of getting good at&t coverage around vermont? i do not want to cancel my verizon plan until i know i will get good at&t service.

    thanks in advance!

  13. whats4lunch Says:

    @Patrick, ATT hasn’t turned up 3G, but I *thought* they we’re re-using Unicel’s GSM network.

  14. Scooby Says:

Patrick – what model is your work cell? Different phones get different reception.

  15. Patrick Says:

    thanks for the replies…

my work cell is the Motorola 510.

i’m hoping they are in the process of boosting coverage…i really don’t want to take this iphone back!!!

  16. Wes Says:

The number of bars don’t matter…how does your phone sound? Have you dropped any calls?

  17. Patrick Says:

    @ Wes…

When i have service, the sound quality is average. i basically lose service once every 5 minutes or so…without moving my position at all.

  18. cdooch Says:

I got an iphone and switched to ATT last week in the same shot. I live where people have a hard time believing I get service……and I get 4-5 bars and things sound great! My wifes cheapo phone sounds good too!

  19. Don Says:

I would guess this is the discount for switching from Unicel to AT&T…. It was little hard to find…

  20. Don Says:

A LOT of fine print and does not apply to the iPhone.

  21. John Says:

Anyone get their first bill yet? ATT did not “turn on” my data plan for a week or so after the initial activation. I called to find out why my visual voicemail was not working. This is when the data plan was turned on. The result? A $798 first bill the bulk of which is “PAY PER USE DATA”. I called to straighten it out and went through the whole thing again.

  22. whats4lunch Says:

Yeah they f*ed my first bill up. They randomly charged me for 14 texts, despite have a text plan AND charge some sort of “activation fee”. Both issues were fixed with a call to ATT.

To be fair Unicel set my up with 3 accounts instead of one when I started with them.

I don’t like the fact that incoming texts count against your monthly allotment.
