On this day when the prophesied 3rd generation iPhone will be announced, I wanted to post my thoughts on my sturdy, reliable 1st gen iPhone I use and have used every day since it’s release in the summer of 2007.
Yesterday, in a haze of activity in a home where we have a newborn (part of my story here), I decided i needed to finally mow my lawn for the first time in this season. Using my handy cathcart jeans, which I seek out as a favorite pant style solely for the purpose of using the tightly integrated side pockets to hold my iPhone, I set out on a borrowed mower since ours is stubbornly not starting at the moment. At some point yesterday, as we all ran inside to dodge the falling rain, I noted that my iPhone was no longer at my side. It was late and I was tired, a constant state for me these days, so I gave up the hunt and went to bed. Today, actually just now, I decided it was time on this sunny morn to have a look around and backtrack where I have been. Sure enough, there it was, in the middle of my lawn having been driven over more than once I am sure, by my lawn mower. Amazingly it was never touched by a blade, though likely run over by a tire once or twice. It lay there all afternoon yesterday, including while it rained. I now have it charging up as I write this.
This thing had been amazing… I have dropped it at least 300 times if not more. And it wasn’t until I was in El Salvador last autumn when I dropped it while running down some steps and it flew out of my hands as though I had thrown it that a crack in the screen accured. Since then I have done that same move or similar to it and it is cracked worse.

I have “loved” this phone deeply; love implying that things we love we use ferevently, like an old dogeared book.
So what about the birthing?
Well, I want to not recommend using your iPhone to listen to music while your wife, or you are performing a REALLY important task, like giving birth.
Last wednesday the 3rd of June, as my wife was pushing our newborn 3rd child into this world and we were listening to a sublime playlist comprised of native and eastern spiritual tones someone decided to call me… oops. It was the chiropractor who promised to come into the hospital to adjust my wife while in labor, but the timing was too late and awkward while my wife pushed for this little guys life. Needless to say I got our music back rather quickly, but still… take my advice… if you are preparing for a birth do one of tow things, use the iPod for that perfect playlist or turn the phone part of your iPhone off, put it in airplane mode!

Congrats on your baby! Below is the transcript of my conversation with ATT about how much the new Iphone 3GS would cost someone like me!
Thank you for your patience! An AT&T sales representative will be with you shortly.
Chat InformationYou are now chatting with Brandon, an AT&T sales representative.
Brandon: Welcome to AT&T online Feature Sales. How may I assist you with your features today?
Michael: what up!
Brandon: Hi.
Michael: oh – i want to see how much it will be to get a new Iphone 3gs when it comes out
Michael: i heard it will be like 600 dollars
Brandon: We won’t have that information until it’s released.
Michael: but – if i wanted to upgrade to a new 3g right now
Michael: how much would that be
Brandon: Which 3G iPhone?
Michael: 16 gigs
Brandon: $299.99 with an upgrade.
Michael: hmmm… where do i purchase insurance on my plan
Brandon: iPhones do not have insurance.
Michael: protection?
Michael: anything?
Brandon: There is no insurance or protection offered on iPhones at this time.
Michael: so when it costs 600 to get a 3gs and i throw the thing against a wall and cancel my account, how long do i have to wait to start a new account to get a iphone at a reasonable price?
Brandon: Well, you’re eligible to upgrade every 2 years, if that’s your question.
Michael: if i cancel my account – how much does that cost me?
Brandon: $175 per line.
Michael: if i cancel my account tomorrow, can i start a new account next week?
Brandon: Yes. However, realize that starting a new plan will also start the whole process over again, and you may get a new number.
Michael: i believe that would save nme 225 dollars
Brandon: When you upgrade or order new service, the pricing of the phone is the same…
Brandon: Upgrading also doesn’t charge an activation fee.
Michael: so – if the new 3gs is 200 dollars – - you are saying i will pay 200 dollars
Brandon: Yes. Upgrading, and new service phone prices are the same.
Michael: oh – ok
Brandon: Ordering new service also has an activation fee.
Michael: i feel less rage now
Brandon: Well that’s good.
Michael: totally
Michael: i really hate the crtappy camera and the fact i cant take video – so i am looking forward to the new one
Michael: but – i am a developer – so not having one was not an option
Brandon: I think everyone will be happy with it. It’s supposed to be more price friendly too.
Michael: coolio – thanks for your patience!
Michael: i know i can be trying -
Brandon: You’re welcome! Not a problem at all. Have I answered all of your questions today?
Michael: yup – take er easy!
Brandon: Thank you for choosing AT&T. Have a great day!
Michael: oh wait
Michael: one more thing
Brandon: I’m here.
Michael: i am not officially eligible for upgrade for a year
Michael: does that matter?
Brandon: Okay. It will. You are able to get the phones at the online price when you’re eligible to upgrade.
Michael: so until 2010 i am again filled with rage?
Michael: yeah – it is giving me a 500 dollar price on the phone i bought for 200
Brandon: Or you’ll be able to buy it at the store. I don’t expect the pricing to be much different at first for new customers or upgrading, or outright. That’s the way all of the new iPhones have started.
Michael: so it will prob cost 500 to 600 for me?
Brandon: We honestly won’t know the price range until it releases.
Michael: i hear you – but the regular 3g is 500
Michael: i would have to say an educated guess would be that the 3gs would be more
Michael: i know its prob not policy to guess
Brandon: Well, I would answer if I had the details, but we just don’t have them yet.
Michael: damn – apple just sent me a fr4eaking email telling about the great new phone too… of all the iriny
Michael: ok
Michael: when i start a new account, can i request a phone number?
Brandon: You’re given one, If you wish to requrest a different number, you’ll need to contact customer care. Also, if you cancel, and sign up again shortly after, the system will recognize the information, and prompt you to contact customer care to reactivate your previously cancelled line.
Michael: so i call… and what do they tell me? i have to pay more because I tried to skirt the system?
Brandon: They tell you that you’ll need to reactivate your old account, and it starts where it left off.
Michael: but i already have the new phone?
Brandon: Right. So if you cancel, and try to reactivate, you’ll be prompted to restart the cancelled account.
Michael: then i get my cancellation fee back? i think i would start to make a profit this way!
Michael: not to mention the hours of useless electronic paperwork i would cause!
Brandon: In that case you’ll need to contact customer care to see what the process will be.
Brandon: I agree..but they can assist you with those details.
Michael: i think i can go into business cancelling peoples accounts for them!
Michael: i cant wait to blog about this!
Brandon: Have fun with it!
Michael: i will! take care!
Brandon: Would you like to chat with them?
Brandon: Okay.
Brandon: Thank you for choosing AT&T. Have a great day!
Michael: you too!
